Meeting-workshop in Florence (5-11 march 2001)

Marialuisa Stringa - Centro UNESCO di Firenze
Reading, libraries, new technologies

Who promotes the project?

The UNESCO Centre of Florence with UNESCO - Paris - Division of the Information and Technology -Direction of the UNESCO Associated Libraries and Co-ordination of the UNESCO Clubs and Centres, with the support of the UNESCO World Federation and the Italian Federation of UNESCO Clubs and Centres, with the co-operation of the Italian National Committee for UNESCO, of the Ministry of Education, of the Ministry of Culture, of the Library of the Pompidou Centre of Paris, of the National Library of Florence, of the Romualdo del Bianco Foundation of Florence, and with the support of the Tuscany Region, the municipality of Florence and the Association of Italian Libraries.

Whom are we addressing to?

TO THE YOUTH UP TO 18 YEARS OF AGE, TO THE TEACHERS AND TO THE LIBRARIANS OF EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AND THE MEDITERRANEAN AREA. It is to them that I have the pleasure of presenting my project of "Reading to build peace".
What is the project?
"Reading to build peace" suggests to unite three issues that play a fundamental role in the lives of the youth in the third millennium: reading, new technologies, and libraries. The project anticipates that a combination of these three components will forge a medium by which to achieve international peace.
The project provides two means of participation:
  • a competition for students between the ages of 15 and 18;
  • the participation of young people of different ages and different levels of school.
We invite students of all ages to:
  • read;
  • enjoy lectures in the library in the company of other students;
  • teach students how to obtain certain books by means of the internet.
What are the aims of the project?
  • To stimulate the youth to read, read, and read;
  • to help them to know the library and to learn how to use it;
  • to favour the knowledge of the opportunities offered by new technologies and their use;
  • to make the youth realise that peace must be constructed through various means, in a society that
  • changes and where "culture counts", as it has been underlined during the World Conference held in Florence in 1999 by the World Bank and UNESCO.
How to Participate in the project?
  • Establish a connection with a local library, whether UNESCO associated or public, which is available to the notion of world peace, and which is committed to helping young people in such matters;
  • find books, materials, essays, stories, which in the opinion of the students is useful in "building peace";
  • complete an index card for the selected material, indicating the reasons why it is useful to the instruction of world peace;
  • once the index card has been filled out in English or French, it should be sent, via email, to the UNESCO Center in Florence;
  • from Florence, the index cards will be sent to Paris to be added to a central bibliography which will be available to all participating countries;
  • there will be prizes, in books, for the authors of the best index cards.

How to initiate participation?

All students, from all ages under 18 are invited to:
  • select literature regarding the "building of peace";
  • find the library which best suitws their needs;
  • compose index cards of books read, and send them to their local club.

What is to be read

Every reading is valid; however, we suggest some themes which could make the choice easier:
  • exclusion: social, economic, racially, handicap
  • stories on the family;
  • stories on the life at school;
  • safeguard of traditions;
  • safeguard of local traditions;
  • meeting of the different cultures in the daily reality.
